Halal hunting in Bangkok
ICONSIAM's food hall, octopus and a whole roasted crocodile.
Phi Phi Islands
By boat from Phuket.
Eid in Kuala Lumpur
Eid ul Adha 2024, after Eid ul Fitr in the Haram that same year.
In 2024 I prayed Eid ul Fitr in front of the Kaaba and, a couple of months later, Eid ul Adha in Kuala Lumpur. In between was this trip: Thailand and Malaysia with my uncle, Chachu Waleed.
We left on 25–26 May 2024 and came home two or three days after Eid ul Adha.
Getting there: SriLankan via Colombo
We flew SriLankan Airlines from Lahore, through Colombo, to Bangkok. The Colombo stop became 17 hours because of a visa desk problem. That story has its own post.
Bangkok
Bangkok was the busiest part of the trip:
- Finding halal food on day one, at the ICONSIAM food hall. Full halal food guide.
- The Golden Mount, Grand Palace and Wat Arun, plus a 5-baht ferry and a cash problem. Temples guide.
- Siam Amazing Park, my first roller coaster. Theme park post.
- A guess-the-nationality challenge at Emporium Mall with my Dutch friend Venomize.
Phuket and Phi Phi
From Bangkok we flew AirAsia to Phuket. From Phuket we took a boat to the Phi Phi Islands and back.
Into Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur
From Phuket we flew AirAsia to Kuala Lumpur. KL was where we spent Eid ul Adha, and I filmed how people wish each other Eid there.
Penang and Langkawi
From KL we went by road to Penang, then on to Langkawi. For the return we took a ferry back to the mainland and continued by road to Kuala Lumpur.
Home via Colombo again
The flight home was SriLankan from Kuala Lumpur to Colombo, with a stop of about 14 hours, and then on to Pakistan.

Tips for this route
- Budget a full day for the Colombo stops, both ways.
- AirAsia is cheap but charges for bags. Pack light.
- Carry some local cash. We ran out of baht at the Grand Palace.
- Muslim-friendly food is much easier in Malaysia than in Thailand.
